U9 Teal v Maroubra
Round 14, 30 July, Drummoyne Oval
U9 Teal finally returned to their home ground Drummoyne Oval on a sunny Saturday for the return clash against the formidable Maroubra Red. This week’s captain Tom led the boys out – and even Coach John ran through the Power banner.
Maroubra jumped Teal in the first quarter with four quick goals to none. Tom N snapped a point, Callum C was stoic in defence gathering repeated kicks and Ethan N and Nick C linked up well with some quick ball movement.
Reds were obviously expecting an easy game. How wrong they were! Something sparked during the quarter time address from John and in the second quarter the Teal boys came out with strong tackling. Harry M even stole the ball out of a Reds’ players hands. Scotty W took a great mark, Nick C’s penetrating left foot pass found Tom C for a great captain’s goal, followed by a huge goal from Ethan N who was everywhere.
In the third quarter the boys played great defence with Tom C taking a strong mark, Kaya chasing hard and the team being rewarded for a number of strong tackles. Teal kept the Reds to only one goal at the scoring end, which was a fantastic result.
In the last quarter Drummoyne came out on top with the highlight being a huge kick for goal from Nick C after receiving a clever pass from Ethan N. Nick’s kick certainly left the opposition questioning how any U9 could possibly kick that far!
Declan B and Sean G were tireless in their strong tackling and chasing down Reds players, Callum C took a great mark in one of the best quarters for the boys all year keeping the Reds to a solitary point.
Coach John and all the parents were so proud of the boys and applauded them off the ground. Scotty W received the award for Future AFL champion for his great effort but every team member contributed and showed how far the team has come this year.
