U9 Silver vs Newtown Swans
On Saturday 7 May 2015 the boys from Drummoyne Silver under 9s lined up against a formidable team from the Newtown Swans.
Everyone got stuck in from the first whistle. A great opening tackle from Gabriel set the tone and Silver put the Swans under pressure throughout the first quarter.
Our defence was tested in the first quarter but remained solid there was some really solid tackling in all positions. The highlight of the first quarter was a fantastic mark by Jake, which he followed with a goal from midfield!
Newtown came back strongly in the second quarter and started to respond to the pressure from Silver, the team was steadfast in defence, despite some robust tackling from Newtown.
Teamwork was ever present in midfield with some nice hand passing from Alex and Fionn. Our defence was spectacular and Miles had a great quarter.
Xabi was relentless in his pursuit of Newton and again showed great teamwork with his passing skills. His hard work was rewarded by a goal in the second quarter.
In the third quarter the pressure from Newtown was relentless but the boys got stuck in. Hamish and the boys in defence had to pull out all the stops to contain the Newtown forwards and there was some really great tackling.
In the final quarter Silver showed that they are really coming together as a team and that all of the training is paying off, marks from Angus and Xabi were noted, and midfield really took the challenge to Newton providing some relief for the boys in defence.
A goal from Jake, from a free kick in the fourth quarter, kept Silver on the scoreboard. As was a common theme for the game though, the majority of play was with defence and Drummoyne Silver fought it out until the very end.
All of the boys played fantastically well, many were kind enough to take turns playing for Newtown and as a result the position groupings had to change from quarter to quarter to accommodate this. But the team coped well with the changes.
All in all it was a really spirited game, Drummoyne Silver showed great character and teamwork.
Coach’s encouragement award went to Miles M. and the Best and Fairest was awarded to Jacob D.
