Cannons U12/2 – Round One

CANADA BAY CANNONS UNDER 12 DIV 2

ROUND ONE V EASTS, TRUMPER PARK, APRIL 3

What a sweet way to start a joint venture!

Any Paddingtonite wandering the streets for their Sunday morning latte would have  stopped as they passed Trumper and had no idea they were watching a bunch of kids playing their first game of footy together – it looked like these guys have been a team all their lives.

The slick combinations out of the middle, the ball movement from coast to coast, the run, the staunch defence, the way they sung the song (well, maybe that bit needs some work).

There were some beautiful, mature, selfless passages of play that would have looked good in seniors footy, many of which resulted in goals, all of which showed that these kids have instantly gelled into a very impressive TEAM.

From Ben M in the ruck giving Nic, Cooper and Paddy first use of the ball in the middle, to Thea, Alex and Will snapping goals up forward and Jezza and Ben C strong in defence, these Cannons have already set themselves very high standards.

Accurate passing and strong marking, composed set shots and incredible snaps gave us three goals in the first quarter and five in a scintillating second term, while keeping Easts scoreless.

We maintained our dominance in the second half as positions were swung around and the high standard continued.

But it wasn’t just the flashy stuff that pleased Coach Tony. When Easts challenged us midway through the second quarter, our backline responded with guts and skill to hold them out.

Not only that, they set up the goal of the day.

Amid a tight contest in the back pocket, Ben C and Jezza combined to win the ball and get it to Damo, who sent it long to James on the back flank. James found Cooper on the wing, but he needed help and received it with the perfect shepherd from Tom which gave Coops time to deliver to Paddy who took a clever chest mark, played on immediately and handballed over the top to Thea who slotted the first of her four goals for the day.

It was pretty to watch, but it was the ugly stuff that set it up – a tough bump and tackle to win possession in defence and a brilliant shepherd on the wing.

Without those little things, the big things won’t come. That passage of play summed up Cannons footy – many contributors playing their role.

If we keep doing that, we could be in for a fun season.

Remember these facts for the trivia quiz at the end of the year:

* Nic got the first kick for the CBC Cannons Under12s.

* Paddy kicked the first goal (and also had the first blood nose).

Goals: Thea 4, Alex 4, James 2, Will 2, Paddy 1.
